A MUST: Home Security Systems
Bad things happen every day, some are inevitable but there are those that we can prevent. We bring an umbrella to stay dry on rainy days or shield us from the scorching heat of the sun. We blow on a hot cup of coffee to not burn our tongues. We bring pepper spray or a dagger as a tool of self-defense. We subconsciously think about our safety continuously especially when we are outdoors. That doesn’t mean that we always feel safe in our homes, that’s why locks are invented.
However, keys and locks are overrated and outdated in this day and time. Ironic how we always want to be safe and protected yet do so little to set our houses with protection. According to National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS), only 17 percent or even less of us use a home security system.
Maybe it’s because of the long process of getting one? It could also be because it is hard to decide what to get with a big market ahead of us. Or is it the price? Let’s step up our game and dive into the world of home security systems. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be rich to have one.
A home security system is a group of devices connected to each other that provide maximum security to your home. This includes, but is not limited to, surveillance cameras, motion detectors, alarms, and system alerts. On average, a home security system is composed of at least two cameras, motion sensors that detect infrared energy, siren alarms, and a base hub where all of these are synced. Most security systems can be controlled via smartphones.
On top of these, you can further purchase add-ons as upgrades. For example, Amazon Alexa and Google offer home automation such as smart locks, smart light bulbs, and smart thermostats that you can control using their smart assistants or AI which are most of the time, voice-controlled.
Companies offer customers the option to install these systems themselves. You do not need to be tech-savvy to be able to install your own for most only require plugging in a device, putting in batteries, and connecting devices to the Wi Fi and your phone. If you want to skip the hassle, you can always hire a professional to set up your security system for $100 as the starting price.
Most home burglars attack when you are not home. This technology will serve as your eyes and ears wherever you may be. NCHSS is confident that unprotected homes are more likely to be targeted by 300 percent and burglary rates have declined in the past decade since the invention of security systems. A survey was conducted among convicted culprits by the Oregon News Station, although many say that they are more daunted by a big loud dog than a surveillance camera, 60 percent of them confessed that they avoid houses that have alarms on-site.
Better to be sure than sorry. In this modern day and age where we have developed a lot in technology, let’s take advantage of that and maximize it. Sure locks and keys help but a full-on home security system will give you peace of mind whenever you travel or leave your home for work. This way, you’ll be sure that when you get home, your flat screen television and your fridge are still there and if it’s not, you’ll have a surveillance video that will tell you where they could be.
